stART - Porcupining

This week we are focusing the letter "P" and we read "Porcupining" by Lisa Wheeler. The book is about a porcupine named "Cushion" in a petting zoo, who is sad because no one can pet him. He goes in search of love and finds it with a similarly shunned animal, a hedgehog. I thought it would be a good stArt project to make some porcupines to go with the story.

Earlier in the week we were taking a walk and collected some pine cones and pine needles. We pulled out the Play-Doh this afternoon, along with the pine needles, and made some porcupines! I helped out with the white one.

Jillian found a couple toothpicks and decided they were easier to put in the Play-Doh, so a lot of her porcupines consisted of a glob of Play-Doh and a few toothpicks. But it was a fun craft that was easy enough for her. And she liked the porcupines!!!

This is so cute. I love making projects from nature, and after our first project like this my little one loves collecting "nature" from outside our house. If only we had something besides dead leaves! Trees with needles, what are those? ;-)
